About

Narratives of Pain is a storytelling initiative founded in 2015 by Dr. Zain Shamoon in Michigan. What began as a local gathering has since grown into an international movement rooted in vulnerability, witnessing, and collective healing. Since its inception, Narratives of Pain has hosted numerous shows across the U.S. and internationally, with annual flagship events and recurring performances in Michigan, Seattle, and other cities throughout the Midwest and beyond.

At its core, Narratives of Pain creates a sacred space where people can speak freely—where pain can be shared without shame and stories are held with reverence. It is a space where we witness one another not in our polished personas, but in our rawest, most human truths. Whether through poetry, storytelling, or artistic expression, each event invites us to be seen and to see others in their fullest authenticity.

This is more than performance. It is a collective act of healing. A gathering of voices, hearts, and histories. A reminder that we are not alone in our struggle—and that there is power in being witnessed.
